The Belasco Prize for Scholarly Excellence

The Belasco Prize for Scholarly Excellence recognizes a peer-reviewed article (or chapter from an edited volume) published in the last two years, that exhibits superior research, a unique perspective and methodological approach, and novel insights for the study of food. Clear and effective writing, engagement with food studies literature, as well as a persuasive thesis, are also criteria for this award. A $300 cash stipend accompanies the award.

    • The article may have been published in any academic journal
    • A book chapter, if it stands alone as a scholarly work, may also be submitted for consideration (a single chapter taken from a monograph may not)Send PDF to the awards administrator
  • Deadline for annual submission: February 1
  • Applicants may self-nominate
  • Membership in ASFS is not necessary and there is no fee for submission
  • 3 anonymous judges, representing 3 disciplines will assess the submissions
  • The awards administrator has no input on the final decision
  • At this time, only English articles can be considered
